Overview of the Solfeggio Scale

The Solfeggio scale has its origin in old Gregorian chants which are made up of just six frequencies or notes. In the 11th century in order to consistently teach these chant melodies and harmonies to choirs, an Italian Benedictine monk created the notations “UT RE MI FA SOL LA” to represent in turn each of the six notes. Together, these notations came to be known as the Solfeggio scale. The name is derived from the Italian word “solfège” meaning a musical system in which each note is referenced by a particular syllable.

By the 16th century, this six-frequency Solfeggio scale fell out of use. It was replaced by the “Twelve-Tone Equal Temperament” scale. In mathematical terms, this means the frequency ratio of the interval between two adjacent notes is the twelfth root of two. This is the scale used in contemporary musical compositions.

In recent times, the six ancient Solfeggio frequencies have been recovered mathematically. Also known as “Just Intonation" or pure intonation, the tuning of musical intervals in the Solfeggio scale is based on small whole number frequency ratios such as 3:2 or 4:3. By extending this algorithm, three more frequencies have been added to the original six.

Why Solfeggio Tuning Forks?

Solfeggio frequencies have been found to significantly influence our physiology and emotions. For example, those who perform chants that use these frequencies have been shown to have the lowest heart rate and blood pressure of the day while chanting. Other research suggests that singing these ancient chants relieves fatigue and alleviates depression.

The six ancient and three extended Solfeggio frequencies corresponding to the nine Solfeggio tuning forks have each come to be associated with a particular area of healing and personal growth. The specific Solfeggio frequency emitted when a fork is played is believed to re-tune a particular dis-harmony in our biofield.
